I was first introduced to Tilt Technology by Dan Zen’s Penguin Flash/Air Tilt Emulator System. This technology was created for designers and developers to aid them with creating mobile applications with Flash, that would enable their games to have tilt, turn and translate the device. The Penguin Tilt Emulator (which comes with Penguin) leave tilt data on your machine. Because the Penguin is able to read the tilt data your mobile creation will be able to produce Roll, Pitch, Yaw, Forward, Right, and Down data. I’ve seen some friends use this technology, and they had come up with some pretty interesting concepts on how to implement this technology into their game applications. At first, it took a little bit of getting used to the new rotation and tilt definitions. We use these sorts of physical movements (Roll, Pitch, Yaw, Forward, Right, and Down) everyday but implementing them and working in a 3d space was very new for me. If you’re interested, you should take a look at Penguin, there are some very clear diagrams that explain the concept of tilt technology or you could wiki the information. When I looked else where for translations of tilt terminology I found a lot referenced flight dynamics the science of air and space vehicle orientation and control in three dimensions. I found it helpful, when trying to understand 3d space/movement (wiki also has some animated gifs to illustrate the concept).

Often, when people think of tilt technology they think of using it just on their iPhone, smart Phone and I guess for air crafts. I was on Gizmodo and saw a video: “ Tilt-Shift Video Makes Demolition Derby Look Even Sillier ” interesting video where they filmed a video of real life gigantic monster truck show combined with stop motion and tilting the angle slightly. Although, this video did not include actual interactive tilt technology I found it inspiring, and perhaps a project I would like to pursue. I would like to use this same video effect paired with Tilt rotation/3d space to let users experience an environment in a less authoritative manner.

Another, example I’d like to share is impressive, it’s called the Future of Poker Technology the concept of implementing both multi-touch tables, mobile phones and tilt technology. This is a fully interactive poker game that utilizes the latest technologies and disregards all traditional poker cards, chips, tables and dice. I think the most impressive part is how the students at the University of Duisberg-Essen really focussed on the exploration of natural ways of interactions, including touching the tables, shaking, tilting and throwing the phone. Fun and clever.

Something I found interesting that does not have a direct relationship with mobile phones, but obviously uses the traditional air craft 3d space/orientations is NASA’s Puffin – Personal Tilt-Rotor Air Craft. This personal air craft is well.. awesome. Its an electric powered, hover capable, personal air craft. I want one. It basically puts all the tilt/rotational movements we create with our hand and iPhone.. but with our entire body positioned straight up. Take a look at the link to find out more details. Its not a real product yet, but there are some cool 3d Renderings/videos to help illustrate the concept. Perhaps in the future we don’t need our personal air craft.. maybe just some iPhones strapped to the palm of our hands as controllers – kind of like a wii controller but more fluid, natural and elegant.

I can see why this technology is important for the future of mobile and I am surprised to see that mostly games fill the market. I’m interested to see and explore how we can use mobile tilt technology outside of the gaming industry but more so within the arts/design community and in general how we can this tool be used better the lives of others? Interested to see where how this technology will grow and perhaps shape the future.

I’ve always loved music and design, and have always wondered how on earth do people synch music to animation. I was introduced to a few technologies that would help me accomplish this task. The first technology is Dan Zen’s Woodpecker from his Flash Feathers Collection. Woodpecker is a customized class created by Dan Zen to help designers create beautiful animations to sound. I was also introduced to As3′s sound spectrum. Hard coding without the Flash Feathers Woodpecker class, proved to be a lot more complicated. But with the help from a few friends, I had my first taste of creating synchronized sound animations with just pure code. I’m pretty happy with the abstract happy accidents that came from this process. Extremely fun and gratifying.

Before I started on this project, I did some research to see what others were doing in this area. A great site with amazing and beautiful examples is http://theflashblog.com/?p=197. It was a nice surprise to see that the winner of the AS3 Sound Spectrum contest, did not create anything like a typical screen saver. You should check it out.

I am extremely happy to have been introduced to this technology, this is something I can see myself, continue do throughout the years.

Multi-touch technology is a method where the user is able to interact with a computer screen or smart phone. Instead of using a mouse the user is able to use 2 or more fingers placed directly onto the screen to control content. Usually, multi-touch technology requires a touch screen (screen, overlay, table, wall, etc.) or touch pad, as well as software that recognizes multiple simultaneous touch points. I have recently been experimenting with Dan Zen’s “Goose for Flash”. Goose is a piece of technology built in Flash that was built with designers and developers in mind. This technology allows for people to build multi-touch games and applications in Flash.

I borrowed this technology to create my own version of a multi-touch game. The game consisted of a doll that two players could drag around on screen simultaneously. Goose technology allows for both players to adjust the scale and position of the doll … creating a stretch and collapse effect. Seeing this technology work and involving multiple people at one time, creates a more engaging interactive environment.

Some other samples of multi-touch technology is a project that recently launched at the New York City’s Visitor’s Center. GestureTek had fabricated three multi-touch tables that incorporated both multi-touch and object recognition. Some of the features include; Google earth fly-through trip through the streets of New York, create your own itinerary and print out information.

Multi-touch is not a new technology, the technology is just now being implemented into the mainstream and applied to more and more institutions around the world. The advantage to Dan Zen’s multi-touch “Goose” technology is that you do not have to use a multi-touch device or blob detection table.

Follow the link below, if you would like to try out this technology.

Video Motion capture is an interactive technology that captures web cam motions to create a gesture interface. This particular piece of technology is very fun and allows for button activation and/or utilizing various effects to follow your motion.

I am a graphic designer with absolutely no programming background, when the time came for me to create an interactive video motion capture piece, Dan Zen’s Ostrich Flash package provided a well structured, easy to use open source Adobe Flash classes that enabled me to customize and create my own video motion capture.

At first, the coding was a little overwhelming as I’ve never worked with ActionScript before, but after plugging away at it, and experimenting with Dan Zen’s various templates, I was able to create my own customized motion capture piece.

The technology is really cool even Science Centre’s all over the world are incorporating this technology in their exhibits.

In 2008 the TELUS WORLD OF SCIENCE in Calgary utilized motion capture for one of their interactive “Edutainment” exhibits. With the help of GestureTek’s Motion Controlled Display systems, visitors were able to interact with the solar system like they would have never imagined. One effect allowed users’ movements to cause images of the planets in the solar system to bounce around the display as if gravity never existed. Users get to enjoy an interactive experience where they were able to ‘control’ multi-media presentations, special effects and games, using nothing but hand and body motion.

More and more we are seeing this type of motion capture technology being implemented in academic institutions, museums, advertising, clubs, restaurants and the list goes on. This type of interactive technology really captures the audience’s attention and prompts them to physically participate.

With any type of web cam, a little knowledge of ActionScript and lots of creativity the results of motion capture are endless and tons and tons of fun.

Please visit : http://flashfeathers.wordpress.com created by the mad inventor Dan Zen. Here you will get a brief introduction to this technology and instructions on how to create your very own motion capture device.
